I have been working as a scientist on soil carbon dynamics and terrestrial ecosystems since the 1990s. For the assessment of CO2 sources and sinks, a proper understanding of the various mechanisms that control the balance of CO2, and generally that of any greenhouse gas exchanged by soils and ecosystems, is necessary.
